ABIE Corporate Member, Thales, has been awarded a $100 million contract from Australia to design a major sonar system upgrade for Collins class submarines
It was announced on 23 November 2016 that ABIE Corporate Member, Thales, has been awarded a $100 million contract from Australia to design a major sonar system upgrade for Collins class submarines.
Thales Australia will engage other Australian-based companies including Sonartech Atlas and L3 Oceania, as well as suppliers from the United Kingdom (UK) and France, to design the Collins sonar system upgrade, Minister for defense Industry Minister Pyne said in a statement Wednesday.
“The sonar system upgrade will install improved sonar sensor arrays aboard each of the Collins submarines, as well as improved signal processing systems,” Minister Pyne said. “Under the contract Australian industry will play a key role in delivering leading edge sonar capability for Australian submarines.” Pyne added. The Australian industry component of the contract to be led by Thales Australia is worth in the order of $50 million, he said.
France welcomes the decision by the Australian Ministry of Defense to select the Thales Group to update the sonar systems of six submarines.
A statement on the France Diplomatie website 23 November reads:
“This announcement confirms the trust placed by the Australian authorities in French companies, which rank among the world leaders in this high-tech sector. Our strategic partnership with Australia is strengthening all the time. Our excellent bilateral relations were confirmed in recent months by President Hollande’s visit in November 2014 and by the Australian prime minister’s announcement regarding the decision to choose the French company DCNS to implement the program to build the next generation of submarines, committing our two countries to 50 years of future collaboration.”
