ABIE Christmas Reception 13 December 2016
To celebrate another successful year, ABIE held its annual Christmas Cocktail at the Australian Embassy, Paris on Tuesday the 13th December. It was a festive occasion during which ABIE President, Bernard Tabary, took the opportunity to thank current members for their support in 2016 and to welcome new members to the business network. He then announced the first event of the new year: a celebration of Australia Day on the 25th January at Club Oz, kindly sponsored by ABIE Corporate member, Qantas.
H.E. Mr Stephen Brady, AO CVO, Ambassador of Australia and Honorary President of ABIE, highlighted the importance of ABIE moving forward in light of the close relationship between France and Australia, notably with the ongoing Free-Trade Agreement negotiations and the major DCNS Submarine contract. This year saw the historic first State Visit to France by Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove and Australia as guest of honour at France’s annual Bastille Day parade, when 140 Australian soldiers were invited to participate in the parade on the Champs Elysées avenue as part of the centenary commemorations of the Battle of the Somme. 2016 also saw the 200 000th Australian working holiday visa approved for a French National.
After strong applause following his stimulating speech, guests networked while enjoying Jantz Australian sparkling wine and a selection of Australian red and white wines, along with canapés, traditional mince pies and mini pavlovas.
With the lights of the Eiffel Tower twinkling in the background, it was a convivial evening during which members were able to wish each other well for the holiday season while admiring both the Embassy Christmas Tree and the recently re-hung Embassy permanent collection of Aboriginal artworks.
